William H. Carpenter (1821–1885)
William Henry Carpenter (1821–1885), was U.S. Consul to Foochow (now Fuzhou), China, during the American Civil War years. He was appointed by President Abraham Lincoln in March, 1861,〔Adelaide R. Prior to his appointment to the consulship, Carpenter was proprietor of a livery stable in his hometown of Auburn, Cayuga, New York and was active in local civic matters, serving as postmaster of Fleming village in the early 1850s,〔Elliot G. Carpenter also was active in state politics, identifying with the Republican Party in its formative years, and supporting New York Governor William H.
